Commission base
The commission base is the amount a percentage commission is taken from. “20%” means little until you know whether it is 20% of the order total, the subtotal after discounts, the profit, or someone else’s commission.
Also called: 10% of what, commissionable amount, commission basis.
Worked example: A Shopify order
- Subtotal after discounts
- $100
- Shipping and tax
- $18
- Commission base
- $100
- 20% commission
- $20
In more detail
Shipping, tax, discounts and refunds are where bases usually differ. For an override, the base can even be another affiliate’s commission rather than the sale.
How ViralPayouts handles it
The base is the amount your checkout reports as collected: the Stripe amount paid, or the Shopify subtotal after discounts without shipping and tax. Overrides name their base: commission, sale or fixed.
